By establishing themes and areas of interest such as exile, the body, magic, Latin America, and migration, it offers an alternative perspective to the usual chronological-biographical narratives that have defined her publications and exhibitions previously. Palau worked in a multitude of media, from printmaking and painting to sculpture, ceramics, and installation, but her work is mainly recognized as pioneering textile sculpture in Latin America. Her interest in the materiality of natural fibers and the realms of both Indigenous and European magic stands out, as well as her anti-colonial orientation.
